Feeding Hope

The Great Plains Food Bank touches the lives of more than 56,000 children, seniors and working families each year who struggle with, or are at risk of hunger. More than 5.5 million pounds of surplus food is donated annually by local, regional and national food industry partners. This food is then distributed to people in need through a statewide network of 230 member food shelves, emergency shelters, soup kitchens and other charitable feeding programs in 83 communities across North Dakota.

Ruth Meiers Hospitality House is grateful to be a recipient partner in the Great Plains Bismarck-Mandan Food Recovery Program launched September 10, 2009. Currently, 19 grocery retailers, restaurants, and food wholesalers have joined the Great Plains Food Recovery Program project. These generous community retailers have pledged to provide surplus quanities of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, meats and deli selections that are still wholesome and nutricious but nearing the end of their shelf life. Food from unserved meals will be collected from neighboring restaurants, hotels, schools, and hospitals as well. Food wholesalers, distributors, and processors will also donate surplus or unmarketable products. This program provides the donation pick up of these foods and surplus items and includes delivery to the 11 participating hunger relief agencies and charitable feeding programs in Bismarck-Mandan.

To Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, this community food recovery program coordinated through Great Plains will add a healthy variety of menu choices that will be served to guests in our soup kitchen, provided to feed residents living in our shelter, and will be included in the food baskets we distribute to individuals and families in need.

This community-wide effort will reach an estimated 4,000 low-income people in the Bismarck-Mandan community each year. For additional information, visit http://www.lssnd.org/GreatPlainsFoodBank
