Burleigh and Morton County Social Services

Both Burleigh and Morton County Social Services provide assistance to individuals in need who reside in their county.

Services Provided:
• Food stamp program
• Low Income Home and Energy Program (LIHEAP)
• Temporary Aid of Needy Families (TANF)
• Medicaid
• Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP)
• Foster care for children and adults
• Protective services for children
• Home community based services for elderly and/or disabled

Community Action Program: Teen Court

Teen Court is:

• A voluntary program where juvenile offenders are sentenced by their peers.
• A program that is focused on youth accountability and development.
• An educational program that promotes positive motivation and develops a healthy attitude towards authority and the community.
• A means of interrupting patterns of potential criminal behavior.
• Designed to try less serious crimes committed by teens as an alternative to real court.

Volunteer Roles:

Youth serve as attorneys, jurors, clerks, and bailiffs. Adults may serve as judge, legal advisors, security, and trainers.

Salvation Army Program: After School Community Center

The Salvation Army provides a free community center Monday-Friday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm to provide families a safe and interactive place for their children to go after school. Program is for children in grades 3-12 and requires parental registration the first day a child attends the community center.

West Central Human Service Center

West Central Human Service Center (WCHSC) provides therapeutic services, support, crisis intervention, and referral services to individuals in need. They supervise county social service programs such as foster care, childcare licensing, child abuse and neglect, and respite care. West Central also provides adolescent addiction services, evaluations, treatment, and parental aide services.

Youthworks

Youthworks is a private, nonprofit agency with a Board of Directors that has been in existence since 1979. Youthworks offices are located in Bismarck and Fargo and they serve the surrounding counties in both North Dakota and Minnesota. Their focus and expertise is in working with teens, parents and young adults under 22 years of age. Most of the services are free and when there is a charge, it is based on a family's ability to pay.

Services provided to youths and families include:

• Diversion Program (provides counseling, crisis intervention, family mediation as an alternative to formal processing, and probation, provided by the Juvenile Court)

• Runaway Assistance Program (provides comprehensive emergency services)

• Short-Term Care and Assessment

• Turnabout (an after school program offering supervision, homework assistance, counseling and recreation for youth at risk of being removed from their homes, youth who are doing poorly in school and youth that are at risk of dropping out)

• Anger Management Training Program

• Peer Support Services

• Americorps/Cross Age Mentoring Program

• Family Support (Family Counseling Cooperative provides affordable, evening counseling services for youth and families)

• Out of School Suspension & Expulsion Program

• Street Outreach (to provide education, prevention and early intervention services to runaway, homeless and street youth)

• Activity Center

• Expecting & Young Parents Project

• Transitional Living (housing program for at-risk homeless young adults ages 18-21)

• Teen Tour (summer program for middle school youths)
